Stampin' Q&A: Punch sizes

I recently received this question and realized that there are probably several stampers wondering the same thing.  

Q: Are the pictures of punches shown in the back of the catalog actual size?  Some show sizes, some don't.

A: Yes, the pictures that look like they were punched out of Chocolate Chip textured card stock are shown actual size.  These are listed on pages 209-213 in the new IBC (Idea Book & Catalog).

DIY: The stamps are also shown actual size in the catalog.  Remember, that we have many stamp sets that coordinate with the punches.  For example; Floral Fillers shown on page 141 (new IBC) shows a colored line around the stamp images that fit inside the coordinating punches.  Below the set you will also find a list of the coordinating punches.  Other examples can be seen on pages 32, 46, 66, 68, 98, 103, 143 and many more!  
Also: Pages 235-236 shows a complete list of all the Stampin' Around Wheels.  These images are reduced, but below each one is the page where you will find it shown in actual size.

Tool Tips: Corner Rounder Punch

Do you have questions on your 3/16" Corner Punch? Is it working the way you had hoped? If you're having trouble achieving the results you want, try these tips:

• Make sure your paper is cut square. Your paper should have straight sides for the punch to work properly. 
• Your paper should fit snugly into both edges of the guides and into the back of the punch. It is critical that you don't try to center the paper by looking through the bottom of your punch;  instead, align your paper using the guides. 
• Set the paper fully into both guides, as well as the back of the punch, almost pressing your paper down into the guides by curling the outside edge of the paper up. Push your paper flush against the guides as far as it will go into the back of the punch. If your paper isn't fully set against both guides, you will not get a good, clean punch. 
• If you don't get a perfect corner, try centering your paper in the guides and punching again; your design should punch correctly. Don't worry; sometimes it takes some practice.
• Cut only one sheet at a time. This punch is designed to cut only one sheet of card stock or Designer Series Paper at a time.

We hope that these tips and tricks will help you better utilize the 3/16" Corner Punch.

 Here's my Designer tip:  For smooth cuts, cut slowly, turning the paper not the scissors.  The only motion of the scissors should be to open and close.  Work in a well lighted area and take your time.  With a little practice, you'll be a pro in no time!

Stampin' Up! Ornament Punch is back!

Have you been wondering when our Ornament Punch would be available again?  We've been having quality problems, but they've been resolved and it's back in stock!  Here's what the company told us yesterday:

Designer Tip: Paper Cutter Blade Refills

This was originally posted on Feb. 20 and had to be redone to protect the photos.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Did you know that the blades for our paper cutter are double sided?  So you actually get 2 nice sharp blades every time you pop in a new refill!  The easiest way to make a cut is to have your paper butted up against the top guide and simply slide the blade from the bottom up to the top. This keeps your paper straight and you get a nice clean cut.  There's no need to press down on the blade, just slide it.

 When you notice the cuts starting to get a little ragged and not so clean, simply pop out the blade and put it back in so that the unused side is now facing the top.  But ... you can't tell just by looking, which side is which and if you drop it (easy to do) you don't know which is the used side and which is the sharp side.  OK, now what?

 What I recommend is to mark one side of each new refill before you use it and to use the marked side first.  That way, you always know which side is which.  Easy, peasy!
